At some point or another we all experience stress. While stress is normal, it becomes a problem when it becomes long term. If chronic stress is not handled, it could lead to bad habits and disease. This is why stress is often referred to as “the silent killer.” At first you may have a few headaches, stomach aches, or hair loss, but if you find yourself becoming depressed or constantly feeling extremely overwhelmed, you need to act and find ways to quickly combat the silent killer.

Here are a few proven ways to reduce stress in your life:

1. Exercise

One of the absolute best ways to handle stress is to exercise. Even though it may feel like you have no time to exercise with your hectic schedule, you have time, and you’ll make time if it’s important to you. The thing many don’t realize is that working out gives sustained energy. The only thing stopping you, is that little voice in your head telling you that you don’t feel like it. Ignore that voice and tell yourself that this is for your own health, you’ll be living a new life almost immediately. There are several different programs and fitness guides out there. Do a little research and figure out which one will work best for you.

2.  Take It One Task At A Time

Having too much on your plate can cause you to spend a lot of time worrying, which can lead to even more stress and negative effects on your body. The best way to handle this is to tell yourself that you can only tackle one task at a time. Assure yourself that you will finish everything you need to. This has worked wonders for me. The key is giving yourself the approval to be human. Nobody can do a million things at once, and telling yourself that you are doing a great job can help motivate you to fully focus on each task as you go!

3. Practice Breathing Techniques

Focused breathing is a quick trick to quickly alleviate stress and ground yourself. Try inhaling for 3 counts, holding your breath for 2 counts, and then exhaling for 4 counts. Repeat until you feel calm. There are also several different breathing techniques on YouTube. Look them up and see which techniques work best for you.

Success is something that everybody wants, but not everybody is willing to work for. It might even feel like you are working extremely hard but still not getting anywhere. Maybe it’s time to check and see if you are taking care of these simple tasks.

1. Focus on yourself.

This may seem like an obvious tip, but are you truly focusing on yourself? This means you do not compare yourself to others–not friends, not family members, or famous people. The energy you spend focusing on others takes away the energy you can be using to focus on yourself and self-improvement.

2. Be wary of the company you keep.

If everybody you hang out with is just as successful or less successful than you, who do you have to learn from? Have you ever noticed your lingo or habits change when you start hanging out with someone new? It happens subconsciously, and if you don’t watch your company, you could be incorporating habits that hurt your potential.

3. Read books.

Books are one of the best ways to help you become good at something. They give you perspective and can positively affect every single area of your life. You should be aiming to read for an hour or more a day. Over time, you’ll learn so much, you’ll wonder why you didn’t cultivate this habit sooner!

4.  Be health conscious.
It’s hard to become successful if your health isn’t up to par. Besides, what is success if you don’t have your health? When you eat well and get in daily exercise, you’ll find that it becomes a lot easier to focus and accomplish daily tasks. It’s a lot easier said than done, but is critical for success.

Get Out: A Horror Film Everyone Should See

When I first saw the trailer for Get Out, I immediately knew that I wanted to see it. Not only did it look scary, but there was a black person playing the lead role–of a horror film! Later on, I discovered that Jordan Peele, who is best known for the hit Comedy Central show “Key and Peele,” created and directed the movie. As a big fan of the show, I knew I definitely had to see the movie now.

At the beginning of the movie, Peele didn’t waste any time bringing the “horror” on. Peele also made it a point to shed light on the thoughts that run through a black person’s mind when placed in certain situations. Later in the movie, the protagonist Chris, ends up having to attend a party with all white people. While trying to mingle, and support his girlfriend Rose, Chris finds himself caught in several awkward conversations relating to his race. This scene is golden, because it incorporates prejudice, white privilege, power, ignorance, cultural appropriation, and assimilation– simultaneously. Peele did an excellent job capturing the many uncomfortable moments that black people often experience.

This movie will have you in suspense the entire time. It will also have you screaming at the screen; be prepared to jump as well. Get your friends together and make plans to watch the movie asap!
